Which brand makes the best essential oil?

If you’ve ever asked this question or searched for it online, you’re probably more confused now than you were before. There are hundreds of posts with dozens of brands listed as “the best.” I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t always had the best experience with essential oil companies.

My first encounter was with someone who tried to sell me a bunch of oils as part of an MLM business. And that person told me that this particular brand was the only “pure” essential oil brand on the market.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and there are a lot of brands out there that list their products as “therapeutic grade” or “pure.” As a consumer, it can get pretty confusing.

What do these terms really mean? Nothing.

When it comes to essential oils, the key most important thing is quality. And if a brand can’t prove its quality, then you have to question their claims.

I’m not entirely against MLM businesses, but it does make me skeptical when someone tells me that they love a brand – and they also happen to be selling it.

That’s partly how I got turned on to Rocky Mountain Oils (RMO). I liked that they were a non-MLM business, but I also liked how they had proof of the quality of their oils.

The S.A.A.F.E. Guarantee

Quality is, without doubt, the most important thing when choosing essential oils. Just like with supplements, you really never know what you’re going to get if you just buy the first bottle of oil you find.

RMO’s S.A.A.F.E. guarantee shows that the company is committed to providing quality essential oils that are both natural and pure.

S.A.F.E. is an acronym for:

Satisfaction

RMO offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee on their products, and they support this guarantee by offering GC/MS test results for every essential oil – free of charge.

They also offer a 90-day product return policy.

Authentic

RMO uses a stringent and rigorous process to select suppliers and for quality testing. They guarantee that all of their essential oils are 100% authentic.

  • Suppliers are required to meet stringent quality guidelines.
  • They test hundreds of samples to find the best oils available. All samples are GC/MS tested to check purity before purchasing oils from suppliers. Samples that contain adulterants, synthetics, contaminants or diluents are rejected. If the sample passes, the company places a bulk order from the same batch the sample was derived from.
  • A sample from each bulk order is sent to a third-party lab for another round of testing.
  • The company carries out multiple spot checks to ensure that the oils meet their quality standards.

Analysis

RMO uses internal and external testing to ensure that their essential oils are free of adulterants. Their GC/MS testing is verified through a third-party, independent lab, and the process is overseen by the company’s in-house chemist.

Along with GC/MS testing, the company’s chemist also performs organoleptic testing on each essential oil. The oils must pass the chemist’s inspection of its physical properties (smell, feel, look, etc.) before being approved for bottling.

Free of Adulterants

RMO guarantees that their oils are free of adulterants.

Effective and Pure

RMO says they sell only 100% pure and authentic essential oils, and they guarantee this standard through their GC/MS testing.

GC/MS Test Results

GC/MS testing is what ensures that RMO sells only pure essential oils. GC stands for Gas Chromatography and MS stands for Mass Spectrometry, the two types of testing used to determine quality and purity.

Gas Chromatography (GC)

According to RMO, GC is “the analytical separation technique used to analyze volatile substances in the gas phase.”

A sample’s components are placed into the GC and then vaporized. Vaporization separates the analytes by distributing it between a stationary phase and a mobile phase.

The data obtained from GC testing tells the company what’s in the oils and how much of each compound is present.

Mass Spectrometry (MS)

Mass Spectrometry is an analytical chemistry technique that’s used to identify the type and number of molecules in a sample by measuring the mass-to-charge ratio.

RMO is very open and transparent about their testing results. Each bottle has its batch number printed on the bottom, which you can enter on their “Get GC/MS Test Results” page.

Also, you know where most oils are derived from because the company lists the country on each label whenever possible. For example, their cinnamon bark essential oil comes from Madagascar, while their cardamom oil comes from Guatemala.

The S.A.A.F.E. guarantee and GC/MS testing are both two major things that set this brand apart from others.

Education

But their commitment to educating consumers is also refreshing. If you’re just getting started with essential oils, you may not know what each type of oil does or how to use it safely.

Each product page contains important information about each oil. Along with a thorough description, you also get information on:

  • How to use the oil, including recipes
  • Facts about the oil, including its botanical name, the extraction method used, the country of origin, the plant part used, the aroma (herbal, floral, etc.), the consistency and other oils it blends well with.
  • Safety, like possible skin sensitization and whether the oil should be used with a carrier oil.
  • GC/MS test results
  • Customer reviews

If your goal is to use essential oils for aromatherapy, the aroma information is especially useful. You may not be able to smell the oil in person, but you’ll at least get a description of the smell.

Each bottle’s label also offers suggestions for use, like “diffuse,” “topical,” or “household.” RMO also tags different uses for oils on the product page with labels like:

  • Mood
  • Wellness
  • Energy
  • Skin care
  • Cleaning
  • Sleep
  • Relief

These labels help give beginners an idea of what the oil can be used for, whether diffusing or using topically.

Along with all of this helpful information, RMO also has a “Learning” section on their website that provides information on:

  • What essential oils are and how you can use them
  • Which oils can be used for health and wellness, cleaning and beauty

They also offer an in-depth dilution guide to ensure that you use your essential oils safely. Their FAQs page offers oil recommendations for mood, sleep, cleaning, energy, skin care and relief.

RMO is committed to environmental sustainability. As part of this commitment, the company uses 100% recycled materials packaging.

They also launched the industry’s first Bottle Recycling Program. All of their used bottles (including returns) are sent to an authorized recycling center to be disposed of properly. You can even send RMO old essential oil bottles from other brands and they’ll recycle them for you.

Affordability

Normally, I don’t like to talk about pricing because you can’t put a value on your health and well-being. But I will say that RMO is different from other big brands in the industry because their prices are actually affordable.

They have proof to back their quality, and it won’t cost you a small fortune to use their essential oils.

Are Rocky Mountain Essential Oils Organic?

Yes, some RMO oils are certified organic by the USDA and carry the USDA Organic label. Some of the most popular essential oils are available in organic form, including:

  • Frankincense
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lemon
  • Lavender
  • Grapefruit
  • Peppermint
  • Orange
  • Oregano
  • Turmeric
  • Tea tree

RMO does not currently offer organic blends, but they may in the future. We hope they have do.

Are RMO Oils Safe to Ingest?

No. RMO oils are not safe to ingest, and we say that because everyone’s health situation is unique.

It’s important to remember that essential oils are very potent.

A lot of plant parts go into making just one tiny bottle of essential oil. Ingesting just a few drops of chamomile oil may be the equivalent of drinking 30 cups of chamomile tea.

Essential oils are generally designed for aromatherapy or topical purposes. Yes, you can also use them in your cleaning products. But it’s better to be safe than sorry and avoid ingesting RMO oils – or any essential oil for that matter.

Where to Buy Rocky Mountain Oils

Can you buy RMO oils in stores? No.

The best way to buy RMO essential oils is directly from the company. Amazon is another option, but if you buy directly, you know you’re getting a genuine RMO product.

Plus, buying from RMO is the only way you can get their 100% satisfaction guarantee and their 90-day return policy.

The great thing about RMO is that it’s so easy to buy from them. Their online shop is easy to navigate, and you make purchases just as you would with any other online retailer. There are no membership-hoops to jump through.

And while you don’t have to put oils on auto-shipment, you can if you want to. The company offers a subscribe and save program:

  • 30 days (15% off)
  • 60 days (10% off)
  • 90 days (5% off)

RMO offers a wide selection of essential oils and blends as well as other complementing products and accessories.
