The Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA)
Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association, or ALBA, operates a 110-acre organic farm 8 miles south of Salinas and provides a Small Farmer Education Program to a handful of aspiring farmers. Students each receive classroom training, mentoring, and a small plot of land on which to develop their own crops. Upon graduation, participants have the option to lease ALBA land and build their farm careers. Maria has been farming on ALBA land for four years. Working three acres, she spends more than 10 hours per day in the field and produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including sweet corn, strawberries, lettuces, cilantro and fennel.
